New York Times sues FBI to get notes of Comey-Trump talks

Considering that Trump strong-armed Rosenstein into writing a letter about Comey's performance in the first place - a letter that never actually recommended the ex-FBI director's firing - and that Rosenstein didn't know POTUS would use the letter as his justification for the decision, it's easy to see how dude would be annoyed. Trump said on Twitter.

"I will say candidly the president and federal government generally, I think, would be better off generally with fewer tweets", said Sen.

USA intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russian Federation interfered in the presidential race to try to help Mr Trump win, in part by hacking and releasing emails damaging to his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. "This is playing out in real time".

With the revelation this week by The Washington Post that Trump was under investigation for possible attempted obstruction of justice, Rosenstein finds himself caught in an awkward pincer - stuck between the wrath of a president who could fire him and questions about his own future role supervising Mueller when he could become a witness in the special counsel's probe. "Even his staunchest supporters will balk at such a blatant effort to subvert the law". John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, told reporters Thursday that Rosenstein shouldn't recuse himself.

Officials familiar with the matter describe friction on the Justice Department's fourth and fifth floors, home to the suite of offices belonging to the deputy attorney general and the attorney general, respectively, in part because of Rosenstein's handling of the Russian Federation matter. "However nothing has changed".

The White House had confirmed that Mr Mueller was among the candidates Mr Trump interviewed to replace Mr Comey. "I mean Mueller is one of the most respected guys in America".

Under federal rules, Trump can't fire Mueller.

As the investigation expands, that raises the possibility that Rosenstein may recuse himself from that role, since he wrote the memo justifying Comey's firing.

Mr Trump has told associates he has the legal authority to sack Mr Mueller.

What is clear is that he could order the Justice Department to axe Mr Mueller, which may result in Mr Rosenstein's departure and would certainly intensify the uproar over the investigation.

Brand is a conservative who served in the department under President George W. Bush and doesn't have a background in criminal prosecutions. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.

And if Rosenstein and Brand were both out of the picture, responsibility for the investigation would fall to Dana Boente, the acting head of the department's national security division and the current USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

That news appears to have infuriated the president, who also lashed out at the media on a day that aides hoped would be focused on his decision to undo some of Barack Obama's detente with Cuba. The attorney general was at a White House meeting when the notification came from Rosenstein, prompting the enraged President to scold the attorney general for the turn of events.

Regardless of the chaos that could ensue in the leadership of the Justice Department, Mueller's investigation appears insulated, and much of the work of the department done by USA attorneys across the country will continue, Cramer said.

"You're not stopping this train", Cramer said.
