Mysterious ship crash off Japan leaves 7 US sailors missing

The USS Fitzgerald has returned to its home port in Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo following the collision with the Philippine-flagged container ship.

A major search operation is under way for seven missing USA sailors after their ship collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Japan. Three other sailors were injured in the collision.

Family members are frantically seeking news, appealing via social media for sailors aboard the ship to get in touch.

Aided by tug boats, the USS Fitzgerald arrived back on Saturday at Yokosuka, Japan, where the Seventh Fleet is based, a statement from the navy said.

Most of the more than 200 sailors aboard would have been asleep in their berths, some of which were reportedly flooded.

The US Navy also said that the ship suffered damage on starboard side, above and below the waterline, and that it had begun to take on water.

Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Japan, Rear Adm. Greg Fenton, echoed the same message, saying, "Navy Region Japan and the shore enterprise are 100% committed to providing support to these families during this hard time".

Footage from the Japanese TV network NHK showed navy crew members working to pump water from flooded sections of the crushed mid-right side of the USS Fitzgerald. A search of some parts of the ship will continue once they can be reached after the vessel is pier-side at Yokosuka Naval Base, its home port.

Two others were hurt along with the USS Fitzgerald's commanding officer Bryce Benson, the military said in a statement.

The incident occurred about 56 nautical miles off Yokosuka.

The U.S. 7th Fleet says on its Facebook page that it is working with the Japanese Coast Guard to conduct a medical evacuation for a sailor by helicopter, and that there are now no reports of deaths.

The Navy ship collided in the dead of night with a container ship four times its size off the coast of Japan.

It was questioning crew members of the ACX Crystal, which is operated by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen KK, and is treating the incident as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.

Trump tweeted Saturday morning Washington time: "Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families". "Thank you to our Japanese allies for their assistance".

The ACX Crystal weighs 29,060 tons and is 222 meters (730 feet) long, the coast guard said, much larger than the 8,315-ton Navy destroyer.

Twenty crew members were aboard the container and no one was injured, another Japanese coastguard spokesman said, adding that the vessel was separately sailing back to a Tokyo port.

Conditions were clear at the time of the collision, though Yutaka Saito of the coast guard said the area is particularly busy with sea traffic.

According to the Navy, it is not known how long it will take to access the damaged spaces in order to continue the search for the missing sailors, whose names have not yet been released.

U.S. Naval Forces Japan said an emergency family assistance center was established and families had phone numbers they could call for more information.

An Alabama woman, Rita Schrimsher of Athens, said on Twitter that her grandson was on the ship and is safe.
