McCartney, Rowling promoted in the queen's Birthday Honors

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, stood silently on the steps of Buckingham Palace before the start of the Trooping the Colour that each year marks the queen's official birthday.

"Keith acted that day with no thought for his own safety".

Among the other eight recipients of the award this year is Sir Paul McCartney and Delia Smith.

He has managed most of the major events across Greater Manchester during the past 10 years.

Sir Billy, affectionately known as the Big Yin and famed for his often irreverent stand-up routines, is knighted at the age of 74 in recognition of his services to entertainment and charity.

The Glaswegian comedian and actor formerly received a CBE in 2003.

Richard Adrian Giles from Pewsey and Richard Derek Tilney from Malmesbury have been named on the prestigious honours list this evening (Friday) due to the exemplary service they provide to their local community through committees, campaigns and education. Actresses Julie Walters and June Whitfield have been made dames.


George "Johnny" Johnson was 22 when he took part in the 1943 air raid using experimental bouncing bombs in Germany.

On receiving his British Empire Medal (BEM) he said: "I am thrilled, especially after coming to this country as a refugee from Germany in 1937".

"I feel really, really humbled and very happy".

"I'm representing the squadron and it is the squadron that is being honoured with this, not me".

The 54-year-old Troulan, who carried hostages, including a baby, out of the mall in 12 separate trips, described it as "one of the hardest six hours of my life".

Most of the awards go to those who carry out community and charity work, many with young people.

She joined the academy from a primary school in Cardiff last September and the honour recognises her contribution to school improvement in Wales and beyond.
