Hawaii enacts law to align goals with Paris climate accord
Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupsi, who joined former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "We Are Still In" campaign, along with mayors of Houston, Atlanta and hundreds of other local leaders, cited the economics for her state: Utah has a $1 billion skiing industry threatened by climate change and marked 65 percent growth a year ago alone in solar power, as one of the country's sunniest states.
Hawai'i's elected officials gathered in Honolulu on Tuesday to show their support for the Paris Climate Accord, following President Trump's announced withdrawal from the global agreement.
Ige also signed Act 33 (House Bill 1578) on Tuesday, which creates a Carbon Farming Task Force to identify agricultural and aquaculture practices aimed at better carbon sequestration.
The signing of Hawaii's laws comes almost a week after President Donald Trump announced he will withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The move makes Hawai'i the first state in the nation to enact legislation that implements portions of the Paris agreement, officials say. J. Kalani English, who introduced the bill.
'The Hawaii State Legislature understands the importance of taking action, and I applaud its work this session to ensure that we continue to deliver the island Earth that we want to leave to our children'.
Mayors from Kauai, Maui and the Big Island also signed a commitment to follow the goals outlined in the Paris agreement.
Hawaii County Managing Director Wil Okabe was present on behalf of Mayor Harry Kim.
North Korea, however, has signed the Paris Agreement, and declared its own "war on deforestation" in 2015.
"The world now needs new leaders, both at the global and local levels and have no doubt that the departure of the US will give room to a whole new set of dynamics but the work will proceed", he added. It would have helped create millions of jobs in the renewable energy sector, which is presently outpacing jobs in the fossil fuel industry.
It linked Donald Trump's "America First" policy and climate change decision with US opposition to Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, calling it a "typical example" of the "unreasonable and reckless" American attitude.
