Harry Kane credits Royal Marines for late Hampden equaliser

Harry Kane marked his first game as captain with a stoppage-time equaliser as England denied Scotland a famous victory in Saturday's 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw in Glasgow.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain gave England the lead with 20 minutes remaining, but a stunning couple of free-kicks from Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths left Scotland fans in hysterics.

Southgate refused to blame his side for conceding the second late free-kick from which Scotland scored, and is happy group leaders England still have qualification for Russian Federation in their own hands - although Slovakia will close with two points by beating Lithuania, while Slovenia are three points back.

At this point, the three points looked relatively safe for England; Scotland had barely threatened, and Southgate's side would have been confident they could see the game out.

It kept an unimpressive England on course for next summer's World Cup in Russian Federation and dealt a savage blow to Scotland's already dwindling chances, BBC reports.

Berra, who has joined Hearts from Ipswich Town, admits that the equaliser was preventable but reflected on the quality of Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane, who captained England.

Poland stayed six points clear as Lewandowski got on the scoresheet for an 11th consecutive qualifying match.

"For me it was great to get that goal and be captain but whoever the gaffer chooses, there are plenty of leaders". We have got leaders in the team and it is just the case that I am wearing the armband.

Scotland next travel to Lithuania and then host Malta and Slovakia, who are four points ahead of Strachan's side in second, before facing Slovenia away from home in their final group game. It looked like we would go on and win the game at that stage, but out of nowhere they score two freekicks.

Southgate was particularly pleased that his players had shown exactly the kind of approach he had demanded from them during their team talks in the week's build-up. "You get hit and they keep coming back and back, creating chances".

"Griffiths to score the goals he did after the work he put in that's taking drive to a new level".

"It is annoying for them - I can't be annoyed", he said.

"I have been involved with Scotland for 40 years now and I can not remember anyone hitting a better free-kick and then coming away and hitting an even better one".

One pass, one header goes somewhere else and we win the game. "We know his mentality, we have worked with him for a long time, we know he wants to be one of the best in the world", added the England manager.

"I think you saw both teams going down with cramp", the England boss said at Hampden Park.
