Grim search at London blaze site continues as anger mounts

Child questions the Mayor of London following tower block fire which left many dead

Prime Minister Theresa May came in for trenchant criticism from angry victims of Grenfell Tower tragedy for allegedly being "cold as a fish" to it, but Queen Elizabeth II was hailed for reflecting the national mood on Saturday, her official birthday.

Protestors at Kensington town hall were trying to reach councillors in person and demand they answer questions about the block. On Friday, working-class Londoners outraged at the loss of life in the Grenfell Tower fire - 30 confirmed dead and dozens missing - took to the streets.

LBC captured one local resident saying that the Queen should give up one of her palaces to house those who lost their homes.

"Frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough", she said.

Anabel Donald, a well-to-do grandmother, has lent her ground-floor apartment to six people from the estate who had nowhere else to go.

But the authority's latest statement said: "While we will try do our upmost (sic) to ensure those affected remain in or near the borough, given the number of households involved, it is possible the council will have to explore housing options that may become available in other parts of the capital".

Thirty people are known to have perished in the disaster but the death toll is expected to rise.

May has announced a judge-led inquiry into what happened, and on Friday promised £5 million ($6.4 million, 5.7 million euro) for emergency supplies, food and clothing.

They also insisted people made homeless by the fire were rehoused locally. Her official one usually falls on the second Saturday in June.

First Secretary of State Damian Green, May's deputy, said the prime minister was "distraught" and shared "the same degree of sympathy and horror" as everyone else.

"I absolutely understand why there's so much anger out there, we all feel it", he told BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning.

Community organizer Pilgrim Tucker, who had worked closely with residents of Grenfell Tower during the refurbishment period, saw the blaze as the tragic outcome of long-term neglect of an entire section of the community.

Separately, hundreds of protesters stormed the local town hall chanting: "We want justice".

She said Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester. "This year, however, it is hard to escape a very somber national mood".

So hoorah for her Majesty the Queen, who praised the country for dealing so well with the Manchester bombing, the London attacks and the tower block tragedy - hailing our collective "toughness and generosity of spirit".

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", Elizabeth said.

And the generosity of the nation as well as those further afield has resulted in more than £3m being raised to help people affected by the fire get back on their feet.

After a tumultuous week that pitched Britain into its deepest political crisis since the Brexit referendum a year ago, May's future was already uncertain due to her failed gamble on a snap election.

Meanwhile, Brexit negotiations are due to begin with the European Union on Monday.

Firefighters using drones and sniffer dogs continued to search the burned-out housing block, that looms over the low-income community in west London on Friday.

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Parris wrote in the Times.
