Fate of program to protect young immigrants still undecided

At the same time, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly officially revoked another program that might have protected some of their parents from deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security announced that it would continue the Obama-era program meant to protect those immigrants from deportation and provide them with work permits so they can find legal employment.

The Trump administration says it hasn't decided the fate of a program protecting hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation, despite saying a day earlier that the program will continue.

The same memorandum rescinds another Obama-era policy, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) [materials], which was created to protect the immigrant parents of children who are U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status. A court had blocked DAPA, and it has never been implemented.

Throughout his presidential campaign Trump had pledged to get rid of the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program, known as DACA.

"DACA recipients who were issued three-year extensions before the district court's injunction will not be affected, and will be eligible to seek a two-year extension upon their expiration", DHS clarified.

At the same time DHS offered its commitment to DACA, it announced it was no longer defending in court another Obama-era immigration policy.

"The future of the DACA program continues to be under review with the administration", Jonathan Hoffman, an assistant secretary for public affairs at Homeland Security, said in a statement. That, Mr. Olivas said, will require comprehensive immigration reform. As president, however, Trump has expressed a more sympathetic view toward the Dreamers, and his administration never stopped processing renewal applications. Recent events have shown that DACA status alone will not protect immigrants from arrest, detention, or even removal.

"We already knew DACA wasn't going away, and then we had the Paris deal", the source said. After Obama announced its creation in 2014, 26 states led by Texas sued the federal government to block it, and it has been sitting in limbo after a judge temporarily enjoined it.

Thomas Homan, acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told members of Congress on Tuesday, "If you're in this country illegally and you committed a crime by entering this country, you should be uncomfortable".

Trump has been inconsistent on his statements about DACA, which was established by President Obama in 2012, having decried it on the campaign as an "illegal executive amnesty" program.

DAPA affected certain undocumented immigrants who are the parents of children who are US citizens or legal residents.

The Trump administration will leave the program untouched, enabling DACA recipients to breathe a sigh of relief.

What's more, the joy in the immigrant community over this DACA news is tempered by the reality of his administration's "deportation force".

The program has granted temporary work permits and reprieves from deportation to almost 800,000 people living in the USA illegally. Thankfully, the executive order never went into effect, because of a lawsuit by 26 states and an injunction ultimately upheld by the Supreme Court previous year. "He still has four years to go", she said. The program only applies to certain immigrants- those who arrived before June 15, 2007, but are under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012.

Both moves scored points with the conservative base that elected Trump, particularly the immigration initiative. Young immigrants began to "come out" as undocumented, telling their friends, classmates and lawmakers their stories of moving to the U.S.as children, often not knowing they were here without authorization.

"DACA has always been a modest though generous holding ground for these students, who are still at risk and who still have no pathway to become legal permanent residents", he said.
