Doctor treating Scalise hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite critical condition
Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others were injured in the shooting before U.S. Capitol Police fatally shot Hodgkinson.
"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, told reporters.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise looks like he will make an "excellent recovery", doctors say - but that wasn't always the case.
A single rifle wound caused "substantial damage" to Scalise's internal organs and blood loss, his doctor explained Friday.
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in". Sava said Scalise would need to undergo an additional operation within the next 48 hours and more beyond that. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Mr Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Dr Sava said. He declined to describe specific internal injuries.
Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run". He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.
The alleged gunman, James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, died shortly after the incident following a shoot out with police.
Officials also found cell-phone pictures of the baseball field where Hodgkinson fired shots, The New York Times reported.
The handwritten list reportedly included the names of Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, who were all at the baseball practice, according to NBC News and CNN.
The note was not considered an assassination list, the network said. The FBI continues to process evidence in an effort to assess the potential motivations of the shooter, the agency said in a statement Friday.
Hodgkinson posted content favorable to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on his social media accounts and signed a Change.org petition for the removal of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's professional baseball team, and the Democrats won, 11 to 2.
