Coast Guard, locals rescue dozens after high-speed ferry accident in Hyannis

Coast Guard assets respond to reports of high-speed ferry hitting jetty near Hyannis

In an accident that passengers likened to a auto crash, a high speed ferry coming from Nantucket island into Hyannisport, Mass., struck a harbor breakwater Friday night, injuring at least 13, Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard Station Brant Point on Nantucket on Twitter identified the ferry as the Iyanough.

Six people on board were injured. According to local sources, by 0130 LT June 17 all passengers were evacuated, including 10 airlifted by helicopter, the rest were went to a tug.

"This was a really good effort by multiple agencies; a good utilization of the new Cape Cod Mutual Response System", 2nd Class Petty Officer Cody W. Seevers of the Sector Command Center in Woods Hole said.

Last year, a Steamship Authority freight ferry collided with another ferry docked in Woods Hole when its engine stalled.

The Coast Guard says at least four people were injured after a high-speed ferry struck a jetty in Hyannisport and began taking on water.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr.

Lamson said the ferry was removed early Saturday morning and is now at the authority's dock in Hyannis.

Although the ferry Iyanough can hold up to 400 people, it was only carrying 48 passengers at the time the incident occurred.

The Coast Guard also said it started its assessment of the damage to the Iyanough and would remain on scene to ensure that boats could navigate through the area safely.
