Britain's May confident on power-saving deal, to open parliament next week

Cabinet briefed on plans for Government deal with DUP

He said his party would oppose any deal between the British government and the DUP that undermined the 1998 accord but he said Sinn Féin would support any additional funds for the north secured in return for supporting Mrs May.

On Thursday, May visited the wreckage of an apartment building in west London, where at least 17 people were killed in a fire, and ordered a public inquiry.

A source in May's Conservative Party said talks continued on Friday.

"I will be speaking to her about a renewed commitment by the two governments to work together to ensure that the (Northern Ireland) executive is established before June 29", Leo Varadkar told national broadcaster RTE on Friday, in reference to the deadline to restore the power-sharing regional government. "But we have to be honest, it will take much more than that for us to be convinced that the DUP tail is not wagging the Tory dog", he told reporters.

In this grab taken from video, Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks in the House of Commons, London, during its first sitting since the election, Tuesday June 13, 2017.

Britain is likely to enter arduous talks on its exit from the European Union without a deal to keep Prime Minister Theresa May in power as negotiations with a Northern Irish "kingmaker" party grind into a second week.

Earlier on Thursday, it was announced the uncertainty in Westminster had pushed back the Queen's Speech - when the monarch announces the Government's programme for the parliamentary session - from Monday to Wednesday next week. The party has refused to give a time frame for reaching a deal, though May is due in Brussels for an European Union summit on June 22-23 when she will want to show she has a solid grip on power.

The Conservative source said: "We're confident of getting an agreement, we're confident that the Queen's speech will be passed".

Before the Mansion House dinner was cancelled because of the fire, finance minister Hammond had been due to tackle fears among the financial elite that May's insistence that "no deal is better than a bad deal" would cost them business.

She has since said the timetable will remain unchanged but there is growing pressure on her to moderate the government's approach and favour maintaining close ties with the European single market.

Britain will be the first member state ever to leave the bloc.

Some opposition politicians say that stance is no longer acceptable, with some in her own party pressing May to soften her position and focus on saving jobs after Britain leaves.

"And if that wasn't enough, calling an unnecessary general election purely for the self interest of the Conservative Party and having mucked that campaign up they are now putting the country in hock to the DUP".
