Bill Cosby trial: Judge declares mistrial after jury fails to reach verdict

Bill Cosby faces retrial on sexual assault charges

O'Neill has declared a mistrial in Bill Cosby's sexual assault case Saturday, after the 12 jurors informed O'Neill they were deadlocked.

"We've been at this now for 10 days [including testimony]", Judge Steven O'Neill reportedly told the jury on Friday. Deliberations began on Monday, and the jury announced Thursday that they were deadlocked; the judge initially denied the defense's request for a mistrial. He has said the encounter with Constand was consensual. Despite her disappointment over the outcome, Allison struck a hopeful note, saying she hoped bringing Cosby to trial would encourage other sexual assault victims to step forward.

And so after 52 hours of deliberations, the sexual assault trial of Bill Cosby ended in a mistrial.

The prosecutors will now have four months to decide whether to retry Cosby on the same charges at a later date.

Cosby's starring role as beloved dad Heathcliff Huxtable in "The Cosby Show" made him a household name, bolstering a reputation built on years of family-friendly standup comedy routines.

Steel, the district attorney from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, has revealed that he will retry the case, ABC News reports.

The jury filed out nearly within arm's reach of Andrea Constand, Cosby's accuser.

Cosby's wife, Camille Cosby, released a public statement giving her thoughts on the trial.

In a statement posted to Cosby's verified Twitter account on Saturday, Camille Cosby expressed gratitude for the jury's decision, but lashed out at the prosecutor as "heinously and exploitively [sp] ambitious".

Steele said he's disappointed the jury was unable to agree on the charges, but vowed to put Cosby on trial again. She said that Cosby gave her three blue pills that he claimed would "help her relax". The deliberation took days, and the jury asked on multiple occasions to review excerpts from the deposition that Cosby gave in the civil case filed by Andrea Constand back in 2005.

"Bill Cosby has already been exposed as a predator who hid behind his jovial mask for more than 50 years and no jury verdict will ever change that", she posted on Facebook. Cosby admitted to using Quaaludes with women in the 1970's that he wanted to have sex with. He was charged shortly before the statute of limitation was set to expire.

The meaning of the phrase "without her knowledge" in one of the three counts against him.

The mistrial leaves in limbo a large slice of American popular culture from Cosby's six-decade career as a comedian and actor.
