Bernie Sanders Ally Tom Perriello Loses Virginia Gubernatorial Primary to Ralph Northam

Northam received 55.9 percent of the vote in a two-way race with former congressman Tom Perriello, defeating the progressive by more than 64,000 votes.

The same polling that predicted Corey Stewart finishing well back of Gillespie puts Northam well-ahead for November's general election to succeed incumbent Democrat and long-time Clinton ally Terry McAauliffe.

Gillespie is deeply connected in both national and Virginia politics and has spent his career working for high-profile Republicans including presidential candidate John Kasich, former President George W. Bush and former Virginia Gov. Moderate Republicans in Tuesday's primary might well have crossed over (allowed in a state with no registration by party) to vote in the Democratic primary for Northam, thereby boosting his margin and gravely damaging Gillespie.

The three-way Republican primary remained too close to call, with ardent Trump supporter Corey Stewart doing surprising well against former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie.

Corey Stewart didn't quite manage the sort of massive upset achieved by President Donald Trump, his former boss and political role model, but he came bad close.

Stewart is chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. Stewart, who rallied around Confederate symbols, was seen as little more than a nuisance, and a minor one at that.

By late Tuesday, statewide tallies showed Northam beat Perriello handily. Gillespie, who vastly outspent his opponents, wound up with about 160,000 votes, nearly 80,000 votes fewer than the loser in the Democratic primary.

Austin Priest, a 24-year-old quality assurance engineer in Norfolk, was one of those new voters Perriello was able to attract. He was the Virginia co-chair of Trump's campaign but was sacked for participating in a protest outside the Republican National Committee offices in Washington. He said he was drawn to Perriello after watching his town hall meetings online.

If elected, Vogel would be the first woman to serve as lieutenant governor and would also end Virginia's more than two-decade streak without a woman in statewide elected office. "The issues Tom was talking about resonate hugely in rural Virginia".

Northam, a usually low-key pediatric neurologist, won running as a pragmatist with state's Democratic establishment's firm support. "I think he stands for the values that Virginians want at this point". Addressing his supporters at the State Theatre, Perriello said: "Together we helped elevate mainstream ideas that should have been there all along", citing his support for a $15 minimum wage as an example.

Perriello also says he will concentrate on lowering debt for education - and will fund two years of free community college for trade and apprentice schools. Gillespie will face Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam.

The Republican Governors Association issued a statement calling Northam "an extreme, far-left nominee that is hopelessly out-of-touch with Virginia voters".

The campaign included personally contentious allegations from Reeves that Vogel and her husband were behind an email last fall alleging he had an affair with a campaign aide, which he has denied and said is defamatory. He's accused Gillespie of trying to mislead voters with unrealistic promises to cut taxes as governor, while calling for a gas tax increase himself to pay for transportation projects. Already in states like Ohio, Michigan, and SC (states that Trump won) Republican gubernatorial prospects are aligning themselves with the president in hopes of winning his voters, if not his endorsement.
