Bark for Life raises money for cancer research

"But as a breast cancer survivor it's just a fun way to use that and spread the word of what relay for life and American Cancer Society can actually do for you", says Amanda Terry, Hero of Hope of Relay for Life. As the survivors walk, other event participants will cheer them on in a demonstration of support and celebration.

This year's theme was "Wish Upon a Cure" and included the traditional survivor, caregiver and team laps, as well as the luminaria ceremony, in which participants like lanterns in honor of those affected by cancer.

More than $160,000 has been raised to date in this year's effort, according to Jessica Poff, community manager with the area American Cancer Society chapter.

Live auctions, food and music also were at the event in order to raise money.

As Springfield was starting a Relay for Life fundraiser Saturday morning, the Quaboag Valley Relay for Life was winding down at Belchertown High School athletic field. He imagined teams gathering together and doing the same thing in their communities and that is what Relay for Life became.

Such was the case Friday evening as the 2017 Relay for Life opening ceremonies began, promptly at 6 p.m.

This year, however, organizers said that the decision was made to hold the event in the downtown area to make it easier for people with mobile scooters to access the activities. The walk continued until midnight.
