All talk, few trades before NHL's expansion roster freeze

Sharks to play Vegas for first time this preseason

National Hockey League teams have until 4 p.m. Saturday to submit the list of players they plan to protect from the newest expansion team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who will pluck one player from each National Hockey League team next Wednesday to form their initial roster for the 2017-18 season.

Conor Sheary, Jake Guentzel, Daniel Sprong, and Tristan Jarry will be exempt from the expansion draft because they were only in their first or second year as professionals or because of unsigned draft choices.

The team could have conceivably asked Seabrook to waive his no-movement clause to expose him in the draft, but it seems highly unlikely that Vegas would have wanted to deal with his almost $7 million cap hit.

"It won't take them long to be good", Wilson said.

In a telephone conversation, Hextall admitted it's not only going to be tough to come up with a protected list (in Philadelphia's case projected to be the seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie option as opposed to 8-1-1) but also part with a player who could help his team in the future.

Ottawa, Florida, Minnesota and the NY Islanders all will have blueliners exposed on Wednesday when the Golden Knights make their picks.

"I can't tell for sure", Botterill said regarding if he knows what will happen between Buffalo and Vegas ".we've talked about different parameters and different possibilities. New teams haven't been given opportunities to get quality players from other teams in the past. They might choose to expose Martin, figuring the Knights would not want to pick up his $2.5-million salary.

That is what makes the 72-hour draft window so intriguing.

And for as much fun as it'll be to make roster selections and do another level of mock drafts for the Vegas Golden Knights, we still won't know which players are actually protected by side deals that have already been agreed upon. There's a similar concern from the Western Conference champion Nashville Predators, who will most likely expose a few intriguing forwards to protect defensemen Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm.

= Player automatically protected because of no-movement or no-trade clause in contract. Commissioner Gary Bettman suggested recently that the upper limit might remain at or close to last year's mark of $73 million. Not after he proved his worth with a 34-goal, 70-point campaign for the Bruins in 2016-17. The Washington Capitals acquired Tyler Graovac from Minnesota so they could meet the minimum exposure requirement and protect center Lars Eller.

The trade, which has apparently been in the works for weeks, will not be officially announced until Wednesday night at the expansion draft.

And in the end that's what the expansion draft is all about for Vegas, we have to remember that.

First, if MAF is taken as expected, that means Pittsburgh won't lose a guy like Hornqvist/Rust/Hagelin/Cole in the expansion draft that many have expected they would all along.

National Hockey League teams have two options for the expansion draft: protect eight skaters and a goalie, or protect seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie. They still have free agents of their own to sign (Schultz, Dumoulin, Conor Sheary) and need to sign or replace Nick Bonino and a couple of defensemen, but the Pens would be sitting pretty.

Marian Gaborik, right wing: The Kings would love to lose him and his contract.

In less than a week's time, the Vegas Golden Knights will have a complete team.
