Trump tells senators House health bill 'mean'

President Donald Trump speaks before having lunch with Republican Senators and White House staffers in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington Tuesday

Trump also labeled the Democrats "obstructionists" at a cabinet meeting the day before for the lack of progress in repealing the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as Obamacare, despite the Republican party's majority in the House and in the Senate. We fear Republicans' efforts to keep the bill hidden mean that, like the House Republican bill, their legislation will leave millions of American without health insurance while driving up costs and weakening protections for others.

Trump's labeling of the House bill as "mean" was a significant shift of tone that followed months of private and public negotiations, during which he called the bill "great" and urged GOP lawmakers to vote for it.

The 13 senators invited to lunch at the White House were a mix of conservative and moderate Republicans.

Now, however, he is sounding a different tune. "I know we made mistakes on the Affordable Care Act ... and one of the criticisms we got over and over again was the vote was partisan, but you couldn't have a more partisan exercise than what you're engaged in right now".

Facing expected unanimous Democratic opposition, Republicans will be unable to pass a Senate bill if just three of the 52 GOP senators vote "no".

When asked to comment on Trump's remarks during the meeting, AshLee Strong, Ryan's spokeswoman said, "Congressional Republicans, with President Trump's support, are working to repeal and replace this awful Obamacare law that is harming Americans", according to the Associated Press.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, West Virginia Republican, said she is looking for a $45 billion commitment over a 10-year period to make sure addicts in her hard-hit state will be able to get treatment under the Republican health care model, which would phase out Obamacare's vast expansion of Medicaid coverage for the poor.

"That has not worked well in the past", he said. But in a May 28 tweet that raised questions about his intent, he said: "I suggest that we add more dollars to Healthcare and make it the best anywhere".

Some Republicans had hoped to vote on a bill before July, but time is running out. He previously described the bill as "incredibly well crafted".

Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch said, "I think we're a ways away" from an agreement.

The White House declined to comment.

MacArthur's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's description of the bill MacArthur helped resuscitate. But If I am among those millions who face losing their health insurance, where would my family and I go for the care we need, and how we would we pay for it?

Mr Trump's remarks on the "mean" House bill are in stark contrast to his previous public position.

Although some Republican senators have admitted to not knowing the details of the bill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that a proposal is on its way.

Some Republicans who have largely been left outside the deliberations say they can't predict what they'll do.

At a Senate health committee hearing Tuesday that was supposed to focus on high prescription-drug prices, Democrats criticized Republican efforts to develop their health bill in secret. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, to a measure that blocks funding to Planned Parenthood is among them.
