London fire: Death toll soars to 30

One Moroccan woman in the mosque, Habiba, said she was looking for a 16-year-old Moroccan school girl Nur Huda El Wahabi who is missing, who is best friends with her son Abdul.

May also said efforts are being made to provide new housing in London for people displaced by the fire.

"It really devastated me", he said.

The Prime Minister is facing particular scrutiny over the role of her new chief of staff, Gavin Barwell, who served as housing minister until he lost his seat in last week's snap general election.

Questions are growing about how the Grenfell Tower fire spread so quickly, focused on the cladding fitted to external walls as part of an £8.7 million refit completed a year ago.

The devastating fire at London's Grenfell Tower has now claimed 30 lives, according to police.

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said there was "a risk that sadly we may not be able to identify everybody".

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead and that number is likely to rise, officials say.

In November, the Grenfell Action Group highlighted ongoing concerns among residents over the safety of the tower, managed by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation on behalf of the borough. Exterior cladding that was added during a recent refurbishment might have played a part, local residents have said. They essentially consist of two thin layers of aluminum sandwiched around a lightweight insulating material.

It said the company that manufactured the cladding also made fire-resistant models that cost fractionally more than the standard version.

The Times reported that contractors are thought to have used panels with a polyethylene core for the Grenfell project.

This type of cladding is 2 pounds cheaper ($2.56) per square meter than the alternative Reynobond FR, which stands for "fire resistant".

Police had to form a wall between the people and her entourage, as the angry crowd booed and threw insults.

Bart Kavanagh, associate director at Probyn Miers, a forensic architecture firm that examines design defects, said the focus of the investigation may turn to how the cladding was installed.

Right now people want answers and that's why I am today ordering a full public inquiry into this disaster.

She did speak with emergency services.

Alhajali, who lived on the 14th floor, was a civil engineering student at West London University. Churches and community centers are providing meals and support, and donations of clothing, toys and household supplies are flooding in.

Queen Elizabeth II, the opposition Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn and Mayor Khan have all met the block's former residents during their visits. The monarch has expressed her sympathies to families of victims of the blaze.

As others shouted for legislation requiring that Britain's aging public high-rises be retrofitted with sprinkler systems and multiple stairwells - which were lacking at Grenfell Tower - Khan said he shared their frustration and called for the government inquiry into the blaze to publish its initial findings by the end of the summer. "Just own up. Do something", she said.
