First round of Brexit talks to begin on Monday June 19

Leader of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party Arlene Foster and Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds arrive at 10 Downing Street in London for a meeting with Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May Tuesday

David Davis has signalled that discussions on the UK's exit from the European Union (EU) may not start on June 19 as anticipated.

While the DUP are deeply eurosceptic, they have balked at some of the practical implications of a so-called hard Brexit - including a potential loss of a "frictionless border" with the Republic of Ireland - and talks will touch on efforts to minimize the potential damage to Northern Ireland.

May wants to negotiate the divorce and the future trading relationship with the European Union before Britain leaves in March 2019, followed by what she calls a phased implementation process to give business time to prepare for the impact of the divorce.

Downing Street said talks between Mrs May and the 10-strong Democratic Unionist Party were "ongoing" this morning.

"Now, I know that Theresa's bad campaign has cast a bit of doubt on this and I saw that Emmanuel Macron yesterday - a call echoed by Mr Verhofstadt this morning - said there's still time for the United Kingdom to change its mind, "you don't have to leave".

But after a generation of discord over Europe inside her party, May's future could depend on her ability to please both the eurosceptic and pro-European factions in her party. Like Alice in Wonderland, not all doors are the same.

"The current uncertainty can not continue", he added on Twitter, urging the United Kingdom government to take the general election result "into account" and not pursue a "hard Brexit".

"We believe that the withdrawal process can not be concluded without the future relationship also being taken into account", the spokesman said.

"All the options are balanced and come with obligations", an European Union official working on Brexit said, noting that May had seemed to be looking for a sweeping free trade deal like that agreed a year ago with Canada but that some of those calling for "soft " Brexit cited arrangements such as those with Norway and Turkey. Divisions over Europe helped sink the premierships of Margaret Thatcher, Major and Cameron, and many of her lawmakers and party membership support a sharp break with the EU.

"I will be speaking to her about a renewed commitment by the two governments to work together to ensure that the (Northern Ireland) executive is established before June 29", Leo Varadkar told national broadcaster RTE on Friday, in reference to the deadline to restore the power-sharing regional government.

The performance of the British economy could also influence perceptions of Brexit.

The Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein, which wants the British province to join a united Ireland, said the prospect was causing anxiety and fear in Northern Ireland.

A cross-party deal for a softer Brexit inched closer today when one of Jeremy Corbyn's closest allies said Labour could support "some element" of European free movement. "10 months later find that there was no real majority for that?" the official said.
