Congressman's condition 'more difficult' than first thought

The game, which was broadcast live on cable news, showed Democrats and Republicans coming together on the diamond of the Washington Nationals.

Colleagues, who visited Mr Scalise at a Washington hospital, sounded generally upbeat but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier. "We love you", congressman John Lewis, representing Georgia, said of Mr Scalise's critical condition. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times. "And because of him, and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, this year players on both teams wore Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, for part of the game.

The single round traveled across Scalise's pelvis, "fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding" stated the hospital Wednesday night.

Congressional Democrats beat their Republican counterparts in Washington's annual charity baseball game, an event marked by the shooting of Rep.

It also provided an opportunity for companies and associations that lobby Congress to get their names before the lawmakers who vote on their issues.

Doctor Sava described Scalise's shot to his left hip as a devastating "trans-pelvic gunshot wound" from a high-velocity rifle.

The shooter was identified as James T Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL who had several minor run-ins with the law in recent years and belonged to a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party".

"He was as critical as can be when he came in", Sava said, adding that Scalise was at "imminent risk of death".

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

"I think anybody that ever played baseball, the dream was to play in a major league stadium", Richmond said previous year. U.S. Capitol Police officers Agent David Bailey and Crystal Griner were both injured in the attack, as was congressional staffer Zach Barth, who works under Rep. Roger Williams. When the members of the Republican team were announced, mention of Scalise's name drew a standing ovation throughout the stadium.

About 20,000 people turned out for Thursday night's game, raising more than $1 million for the Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and The Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

Prior to the update on Scalise's medical condition, an aide read a statement from Scalise's wife, Jennifer Scalise.
