China Steps Up Security at Education Facilities After Deadly Kindergarten Blast

Seven killed after explosion at Chinese kindergarten

An eighth person later died from their injuries, police in the local government in Xuhou said on its Weibo social media account.

According to the statement, the man suffered from an autonomic nervous system disorder with symptom like dizziness and problems with basic bodily functions. He had dropped out of school but was employed.

Police have not yet provided a motive for the attack.

The woman, who was holding a baby during the interview as she sat on her bed, said she blacked out and only woke up while being treated.

According to Party newspaper People's Daily, two people were killed immediately in Thursday's blast, while another five died following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.

In a video footage broadcast by CCTV news, adults and children were seen lying on the ground that was stained with blood.

The videos showed ambulances arriving, medics wheeling people into an emergency room and medical personnel treating what appeared to be a child. Another showed people in hospital.

His daughter attended the school and was later taken home safely by her grandfather, he said.

"It's so scary", said a man surnamed Meng, who learned about the explosion online.

Witnesses told local media the explosion happened at a stall where hawkers were selling deep-fried snacks, and may have been caused by the mishandling of gas canisters.

On Friday, police officers wearing blue plastic around their shoes scoured the scene of the explosion in front of the kindergarten on the outskirts of Xuzhou city.

The blast took place around 5 p.m. near the entrance of the kindergarten in Xuzhou, in the coastal province of Jiangsu, the official Xinhua news agency said.

He was reportedly suspended from his school because of mental issues.

The attack happened before the children were let out of the school, the authorities said, saying no teachers or pupils were among the victims.

It later emerged that the fire had been started deliberately by the driver, who also died.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Xue.

In 2013, a wheelchair-bound man detonated a homemade bomb at Beijing global airport as a protest at alleged police brutality.

But with China maintaining strict control on firearms, most of the other attacks have involved knives or other sharp implements, such as last year's attack on an elementary school in northern China that left seven children wounded.
