British PM May faces mounting criticism over London tower block blaze

May announced the aid package to victims of the fire inside St. Clements church close to Grenfell Tower in west London.

Extra fire safety checks were immediately organised across local authorities, including Camden, Newham, Croydon and Redbridge.

The aluminium cladding, called Reynobond, was made by USA company Arconic and had a polyethylene core, which the reports said was slightly cheaper than fire-resistant models by the same manufacturer.

She was pictured talking to fire officers and staring up at the blackened remains of the Grenfell Tower, but was criticised for leaving without talking to residents.

Meanwhile, Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom faced angry residents at the scene and attempted to defend her boss.

London Police have launched an investigation to determine whether any crimes contributed to the blaze. "Automatically everybody turns up because we are one family", Phupinder Singh, a volunteer said. "Now the government is making five million pounds available as emergency funds for people who need just to get money to be able to buy the normal things of everyday life", said May. The protesters were angered when no one from the council came out to address their concerns, reporters said.

Having ordered a full public inquiry into the incident, Prime Minister Theresa May also visited some victims at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital after criticism she failed to visit residents on Thursday during a visit to the site.

The PM had earlier visited Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to meet staff and patients who were caught up in the fire. "She was very, very loved by a lot of people", she said.

Earlier, Commander Cundy said of the death toll: "I'd like to hope that it isn't going to be triple figures".

Local residents shouted angry questions when London mayor Sadiq Khan paid a visit to the area.

"It is criminal to wrap homes in flammable plastic", read another sign after it emerged that cladding installed on the exterior walls of the tower as part of refurbishment was officially graded as not fire-resistant. The Telegraph collected some of the known names of the dead with pictures, mostly from the accounts of people searching for lost friends and family members.

According to the BBC, the cladding had a plastic core and was similar to that used by high-rise buildings in France, the United Arab Emirates and Australia, which had also suffered fires that spread.

Forensic experts said the fire at Grenfell was so hot that could be compared to a cremation - a development that's going to make it hard to identify all the victims.

Told there was a need for the public to hear her say something had gone badly wrong and the Government accepted responsibility, Mrs May said: "Something bad has happened".
